Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct severe cases like bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities and malocclusion. As one of the nine recognized dental specialties, oral and maxillofacial surgery focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face and skull.

How does orthognathic surgery work?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon in a hospital will perform your orthognathic surgery. Depending on the severity of your case, orthognathic surgery can take several hours. After a two-week healing period, your orthodontist will once again “fine-tune” your newly healed jaw. You will have to wear braces for 6 to 12 months following surgery. After your braces are removed, you will wear a retainer to help maintain your new smile!

Do I need surgical orthodontics?

Your orthodontist can tell you if you need orthognathic surgery as part of your treatment. If you need surgical orthodontics, your orthodontist will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to deliver the best care possible.

Orthognathic surgery is usually recommended for adults with improper bites or other aesthetic concerns. To receive orthognathic surgery, the patient’s jaw should be finished growing – typically, at the age of 16 for females or 18 for males. Orthognathic surgery helps to properly align the jaw so that dental braces can be used to shift the teeth into their proper position.

What are the risks associated with orthognathic surgery?

As with any major medical procedure, orthognathic surgery may carry certain risks. If you’re concerned about an upcoming treatment with orthognathic surgery, please let Dr. Shannon Lewis and our Lewis Braces team know. We are happy to answer any of your questions and provide you with additional information. We value your comfort.

If you think you or your child would benefit from orthognathic surgery, call Lewis Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.
